Article 86 of the Treaty of Lisbon on the functioning of the European Union (TFEU) provides that the European Council may establish a European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), in order to combat crimes affecting the financial interests of the European Union.
With regard to this, on 8th June the Ministers of Justice of 20 Member States have reached an agreement concerning the institution of the said Office.
The new structure will investigate on bribery, money laundering and VAT fraud. At a central level, the European Prosecutor will be responsible for the general functioning of the Office. At a decentralized level, European Delegated Prosecutors operating in each Member State will carry out investigations according to their national legislation and to the Regulation establishing the EPPO.
The said (draft) Regulation has now to be approved by the European Parliament.
